Er zijn weer een aantal seminars deze week. Morgen is er een presentatie door doctor Bruno Robert over Organisation and Dynamics of a Biological Membrane System: The Photosynthetic Membrane. Hieronder is de abstract te lezen:

Biological Membranes are extremely complex systems, governed by still not fully understood interactions involving proteins, lipids and the aqueous phases. One of the best characterized biological membranes, the photosynthetic membrane, displays a highly hierarchical organization and the capacity of dynamic response to the metabolic state of the organisms.
In the recent years, the combined use of molecular biology and advanced techniques has shed some light on the nature of interactions which underlie its multi-level structure and its dynamics. In this emerging picture, a complex interplay has appeared between the formation of the supramolecular assemblies present in this membrane and the molecular structure of their component proteins, which may, at least for part, account for its functional dynamics.

Overmorgen is er een bachelorpresentatie van Prejaas Tewarie, over Dynamic Causal Modeling for EEG/MEG: a reliability and reproducibility study. De abstract hiervan:

One of the biggest challenges in neuroscience is to unravel how groups of neurons in the brain are connected and how they communicate. Connectivity research can be divided into structural and functional studies. Structural connectivity studies focus on the underlying anatomical networks and functional connectivity studies on the communication between brain regions. Dynamic causal modelling (DCM) is a relatively new approach that uses a biophysical model describing neuronal dynamics to study causal communication between brain regions. The parameters of the model such as connection strengths and delays are estimated using experimental data from EEG recordings. In DCM a network consists of neuronal populations and connections between these populations. Here we analysed the reliability and reproducibility of the DCM method by altering the spatial coordinates of a neuronal population by applying DCM on split datasets and by altering the connection matrix to see how this affects the parameters. Results showed high variability in estimated parameters. L-curve analysis of the data demonstrated that the minimum number of populations that can be used to describe the data was less than the number of populations used in the model. Therefore DCM seems to fail in its attempt to estimate a lot of parameters on limited data.

Ten slotte: als je nog geen idee hebt wat je deze vakantie wil gaan doen, en deze goed wil besteden, denk dan aan vrijwilligerswerk. Zo kreeg het bestuur afgelopen week deze mail:

Kinderen met beperking zoeken jou voor onvergetelijke vakantie!

Stichting Wielewaal organiseert in verschillende schoolvakanties vakantiedagopvang (kinderthemaweken) voor kinderen met een beperking. We zijn op zoek naar enthousiaste vrijwilligers die het leuk vinden om de kinderen een onvergetelijke vakantieweek te bezorgen. Iets voor jou?

Tijdens de kinderthemaweken komen de kinderen van 8 tot 18 uur. Een vrijwilligersteam is de hele week aanwezig en organiseert allerlei activiteiten binnen een vooraf vastgesteld thema. Een speurtocht met rolstoelen, koekjes bakken met blinde kinderen of een sportieve apenkooi met ADHD-ers… Voor iedereen is wel iets leuks te doen. Per 2 kinderen zet Wielewaal 1 vrijwilliger in, zodat je voldoende tijd en aandacht hebt om de activiteiten aan te passen naar de mogelijkheden en niveaus van de aanwezige kinderen. Daarnaast verzorgt Wielewaal campingrecreatie voor kinderen met en zonder beperking op Camping De Ruimte in Dronten. Ervaar hoe leuk het is om een groep kinderen een onvergetelijke tijd te bezorgen!

Wielewaal zoekt vrijwilligers voor verschillende vakantieweken en locaties. Als vrijwilliger help je bij het organiseren en uitvoeren van de activiteiten. Indien nodig help je de kinderen met eten en drinken en toiletgang. Op elke locatie is een ervaren recreatieleider en (waar nodig) een verpleegkundige aanwezig, zodat je er nooit alleen voor staat. Vooraf ontvang je uitgebreide informatie en een instructie. Minimumleeftijd is 17 jaar, een speciale opleiding is niet nodig. Naast de kinderthemaweken organiseert Wielewaal ook groepsvakanties voor jongeren met een lichamelijke of meervoudige beperking of met ADHD/Autisme. Enthousiast geworden?
