Granular media appetizer

This topic is part of the AIO/OIO course (given to PhD students) on "Physics Today". It addresses granular media by starting from the paper:

H.M. Jaeger, S.N. Nagel and R.P. Behringer, The physics of granular materials, Physics Today, April 1996, p32. (2 Mb)

During this overview of only 2 hours lecture-time we cover many aspects of granular materials, such as granular solids, liquids and gases.

The lecture notes of 2000 are available as a big pdf file: lecture-notes 2000 (3.6 Mb). This size is due to the large number of pictures/plots included.

The lecture notes of 2003 are available as an even bigger pdf file: lecture-notes 2003 (28 Mb). This size is due to the large number of pictures/plots included.

Note that none of this material is my own work. All pictures/plots are taken from the references given. My contribution was only to order this material into (I hope) structured notes.
